IT/OT convergence powered by Industry 4.0 dominated the manufacturing innovation narrative over the last decade.

Industry 4.0 technologies have led to many “smart” advances, such as smart manufacturing, where sensors and equipment with embedded software can talk to the ERP, CRM, and supply chain systems, resulting in significant improvements in production efficiencies. We have also become reliant on intelligent and connected “smart” consumer products, such as speakers, cars, homes, and cities.

However, technology initiatives cannot stand independently; they must align with the overall business transformation program. Most manufacturing organizations, including those in the aerospace, automotive and medtech sectors, continue to operate in silos, resulting in reduced visibility, decision-making delays, and value chain inefficiency. With increasing product complexity, changing customer preferences, and complex supply chains, manufacturing operations, technology, and business strategy will need to converge.

Watch a hand-picked panel of engineering / enterprise leaders and service providers plus the HFS analyst team, led by Phil Fersht, who posed the following questions:

  1. Digital engineering-led IT/OT convergence is not some sci-fi story—it’s essential for survival. Then why are we still struggling with “digital transformation”?
  2. Automation, AI, analytics, blockchain, IoT, AR/VR, 5G, quantum computing… How do manufacturing organizations stay at the edge of innovation?
  3. While digital aims to address the technical debt in Global 2000 manufacturing enterprises, how do we address the ballooning process debt and talent debt across the manufacturing value chain?
  4. COVID-19 shined a light on our supply chains and illuminated the cracks that have always existed. How do we unshackle our supply chain?
  5. While engineering services have traditionally operated in a market of their own, will these services become closely linked with technology and business services as Industry 4.0 expands beyond the shop floor to the supply chain?
  6. The Women’s Engineering Society reported Engineering UK figures that show women make up only 14.5% of all engineers in the UK. In the US, the Census Bureau says that women make up almost half of the workforce but have only 27% of the STEM jobs. How can we go about improving diversity within the engineering sector?
