Professor Sir Alan Fersht

Sir Alan Fersht is a world leading scientist, with interests spanning chemistry and biology, and has co-founded three biotech companies. He has been elected to three of the most prestigious societies of the USA – Foreign Associate of the National Academy of Sciences (USA), Honorary Foreign Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Foreign Honorary Member of the American Philosophical Society – as well as UK and European academies – Fellow of the Royal Society, Member of European Molecular Biology Organization, and Member of Academia Europaea.

He has won several international awards, including: the FEBS Anniversary Prize, 1980; Novo Biotechnology Award; Charmian Medal of the Royal Society of Chemistry; The Gabor Medal of the Royal Society; Max Tishler Lecture and Prize, Harvard University; FEBS Datta Lecture and Medal; Jubilee Lecture and Harden Medal of the Biochemical Society; the Feldberg Foundation Prize; Distinguished Service Award, Miami Nature Biotechnology Winter Symposium; the Davy Medal of the Royal Society; the Chaire Bruylants; Natural Products Award of the Royal Society of Chemistry; the Anfinsen and Stein and Moore awards of the Protein Society; the Bader Award of the American Chemical Society, Linderstrøm-Lang Prize and Medal; Bijvoet Medal; The Royal Medal of the Royal Society and the G N Lewis Medal of University of California at Berkeley.

He was knighted in 2003 for his work on protein science, and has honorary degrees from Uppsala, Brussels, Weizmann Institute, Imperial College and The Hebrew University. He has honorary professorships in China in Shanghai, Chengdu and Qingdao. He has world-wide experience in the needs of science and biotechnology.
