Research Analyst AI Governance and Emerging Technology
Uma Estelle Sarkar is a Research Analyst at HFS Research, specializing in AI governance and emerging technology. Based in London, her work explores how organizations are responding to the rapidly evolving landscape of AI, with a particular interest in governance, enterprise controls, and the London startup ecosystem.
Uma brings a technical and policy-oriented perspective to her research, with experience spanning AI development, government technology, and responsible AI. Before joining HFS, she worked as a Government and Public Services analyst at Deloitte, supporting the modernization of federal systems and developing technology solutions for government clients. She previously worked as an AI developer at a legal-tech startup. She has also conducted research on the evaluation and governance of AI systems, including developing frameworks for assessing risks in AI mental-health platforms.
She holds an MPhil in Ethics of AI, Data, and Algorithms from the University of Cambridge and a BS in Computer Science from Texas A&M University. Uma is particularly interested in the gap between AI governance as a regulatory or ethical concept and governance as something organizations must actually operationalize.
