Dell recently held its annual analyst day in the beautiful but rain soaked hills of Austin. Amid the news of flash floods, those in attendance were thankful to be on high ground. Yet the storms that brought such tragedy for some also served as an important reminder. In the midst of external challenges, opportunities to overcome them can and must be found. So it is with Dell, whose roots as a PC manufacturer might have left it on the same path as Gateway or Compaq.
 
The rains also reminded HfS of the cyclical nature of this industry. Like the perennial floods that repeatedly follow dry spells, the story of Dell’s rebirth is one we felt compelled to tell last year in the wake of its analyst day. Similar to the news of flood, the importance of getting such word out must preclude a desire for originality. What follows is yet another take on why Dell’s Services business is well positioned for success in the increasingly competitive and challenged landscape of IT Services.
