The IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) has been the subject of heated discussions amongst IT operations departments and IT service providers for the last 10 years.
There is a general consensus that ITIL is now the de facto process methodology standard for IT service delivery and support, but just how widespread is the use of ITIL really? And, given that cloud computing is now the number one trend in the industry3, it would be interesting to know how cloud is going to change ITIL and which direction ITIL is going in the future.
To answer these questions, HfS Research designed and executed a telephone survey of enterprise IT budget holders. As far as ITIL is concerned, the HfS Research Global IT Trends Survey 2013 concludes that ITIL is used today by almost three quarters of enterprises—an impressive number indeed. ITIL’s future will diverge into five possible usage scenarios: (a) A new and “lighter” ITIL, (b) A future without ITIL, (c) An ITIL for data center use only, (d) An unchanged ITIL, and (e) A new and “heavier” ITIL specifically for telcos.
